New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) Five female students were killed and at least 30 wounded early Thursday in a stampede at a school in the capital because of rumors that the electric current had leaked into the water that had flooded the school after heavy rain night, said police.
The incident took place at the School of Government Secondary (class 6-12) in Khajoori Khas in northeast Delhi tomorrow. The victims were in class 7, 8 and 10 who had come to school in the rain for their mid year exams.
Heavy rain overnight had left school facilities as well as a large part of Delhi, flooded, and when the children were in a buzz around the ankle deep water in the ground floor was full of electricity. The children panicked and started running helter-skelter, resulting in a stampede on a ladder, a police officer.
Consolidate the number of fatalities and injuries are common Rigspolitichefen Dharmendra Kumar said the injured have been admitted to GTB Hospital.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit visited the hospital and expressed regret over the tragedy.
"An enquiry will be held and action taken against those responsible," she told reporters. The local deputy commissioner will hold the enquiry. Dikshit announced payment of Rs.100,000 tro the next-of-kin of those killed and Rs.50,000 to those seriously injured.
According to Delhi Police, extra force have been sent to the school area and the GTB hospital.
